Malar Implants
Malar implants aka cheek implants are often surgically inserted to change the contour of your face. If you have flat bones in your cheeks that do not define your face, cheekbone implants are the answer to this dilemma. Older people who have been experiencing a slow sunken look to the cheeks are also great candidates for malar implants.
Creating a fullness or lift is the primary reason for malar implants. For some people, they may combine several cosmetic procedures into one surgery such as cheek implants and blepharoplasty. Photos are often taken before to compare to those after surgery results. Each surgeon uses their own techniques with malar implants and they could insert cheek implants frontally or laterally and even will do both ways. It all depends on your existing health and bone structure.
There are different kinds of cheek implant materials. First of all, there is cadaver bone which has been harvested and surgically and sterilized for use in malar implants. There are silicone cheek implants also known as silastic cheek implants which are made from a rubber like material that is study, yet flexible. Other materials exist for the cheek implant like polyethylene and even gore-tex.
There is some concern with silastic cheek implants and bone erosion. For the most part, this is an unfounded problem. Many people have their cheek implant after the surgery checked, even years later and there is no problem.
If you are thinking about malar implants, you will want to look for the right doctor. Your best bet to find cheek implants done properly is to look to the American Medical Association to get a list of cosmetic surgeons in your area. From there, you can do some research to see which ones have done the most malar implants. You want a doctor who has performed the procedure many times.
Make sure that you are getting malar implants for the right reasons. Don’t try and emulate movie stars with cheek implants. Be yourself. And when searching for the right surgeon for your procedure, look into how much cheek implants are. Because unless, the surgery is medically necessary, those malar implants will be cosmetic and therefore not covered by insurance.
And while the surgery takes about an hour, you will be recovering from your malar implants for several weeks. It takes a while for the swelling and bruising to dissipate. But once healing is complete, your malar implants will have given you a whole new facial look.
