Crooked Teeth

There are people everywhere with crooked teeth. Several reasons exist as to how crooked teeth become that way. Some are just slightly misaligned while others overlap or twist around another tooth. One person may have a mouth that is simply too small to hold all their teeth which causes the crookedness. Sometimes, the lower and upper jaws are not the same size or in alignment, so this causes crooked teeth as well. A bigger lower jaw is sometimes called an underbite and a bigger upper jaw is sometimes called an overbite.

Just like crooked teeth on dogs, crooked teeth on humans can be the result of genetics. In fact, if a pointy incisor can be passed down from generation to generation, why not crooked teeth? Crooked teeth genes are not likely to be found on your chromosomal strands any time soon, so it takes physical manipulation from outside forces to correct the problem. However, before getting into some treatment plans for crooked teeth, there are some more causes of crooked teeth that should be spelled out:

• Sometimes, if you loose your baby teeth or even new adult teeth early, you can bet that you will have some teeth that grow crooked.
• If you had dental work when you were young, chances are that they could have been done improperly or even removed before it was time. Sometimes, people wear braces for years and within a year of having them taken off, the teeth move out of alignment.
• Accident or injury to your mouth or jaw can cause crooked teeth.
• Thumb sucking or baby bottle use for a prolonged period also contributes to crooked teeth.
• Some people have missing teeth so when their other teeth come in, they may grow in crooked. Crooked missing teeth are common.
• You may have a nice set of chompers on the top, but your lower teeth are crooked. This could be because you only have wisdom teeth in your lower jaw which is crowding your other erupting teeth. You see, some people are born with four wisdom teeth, some with two and others don’t have any at all.

The most common practice of straightening crooked teeth is braces. Many kids view this as a right of passage that they must endure. For others, all it might take is pulling one or two teeth so that the permanent teeth have room to grow.
